wanderlust_keep_alive

If this were a normal year, I would be in Alaska the next month. But this is definitely not a normal year, and hence, I am sheltering in my hometown(Chandigarh), surrounded by books, journals, and a laptop.

The Coronavirus outbreak has effectively stopped every one of us from traveling. Almost every day, I tell myself that this is temporary and we will soon find medicine and vaccine to deal with this deadly virus. The day will definitely come when we will once again travel freely all across the globe.

This blog is just a small effort for all my fellow travelers to keep their wanderlust alive. Here, I have written about marking the places you have visited and places you want to go on Google Maps with detailed instructions. I hope, this will rekindle your wanderlust and give you a chance to relive those memories as well. 🙂

Save Visited Places

Google automatically saves all your visited places if your Location History is On. But, in case, you don’t want to turn in on permanently, then star marking all your visited places is a nice option. One of my friends suggested this to me and since then, I star mark all visited places. This really gives a sense of achievement in times like today when we can’t travel.

So, let’s get started:

  1. Open Google Maps and make sure you’re signed in to your Google Account
  2. In the top left, click menu > your places > Saved
  3. Under Saved, you will see 3 options and out of which one is starred places
  4. Edit the list and update it with all the places you have visited so far
I have star marked all my visited places in States this way.

Alternatively, you can also search the places on Google Maps directly and then save them under the starred places category as shown below.

How to Star Mark your visited places

Want-To-Go Places

Once you are done with the above exercise, spend some time preparing the list of want-to-go places and of course, mark them on Google maps. So, as soon as you see some exotic location in the movie, or read it in the book, make sure you add it in the Want-to-go list.

So, let’s get started:

  1. Open Google Maps and make sure you’re signed in to your Google Account
  2. In the top left, click menu > your places > Saved
  3. Under Saved, you will see 3 options and out of which one is Want-to-go
  4. Edit the list and update it with all the places you wanted to visit after this pandemic

Voila, now you have a legacy of your travel history (and future) to share with your loved ones or even your kids.

Over to you

What about you? I would love to know what you’re doing to keep your wanderlust alive. What books are you reading, films are you watching, songs are you listening to? What other wanderlust wakening suggestions do you have to share? Please put them in the comment section below.

Again, amid this uncertainty, this is our constant: We’re going to keep talking about travel because this too shall pass 🙂
